I
had told Jenny that I can't test a dog to see if they will
"alert" to a seizure and that it is rare to find
one that will. He did not alert to the first one but he was
aware that something was going on and he stayed glued to her
the rest of the trip.
When
we got them home he stayed right by her side while we put
her into bed then laid down beside the bed on the floor and
there he stayed until she got out of bed hours later. Jenny
said that he would sit up and nose her every now and again.
Whiten a few days he started reacting before she had a seizure.
We
then set aside a week that Jenny and Clancy would spend with
me to help them work together.
Curtis
let us stay at his house where we would have room to work.

My
first task was to figure out how Clancy was alerting, then
help him and Jenny understand what to do.
In
a day we figured out that he was alerting her by stepping
in front of her while standing or walking. He would breath
heavily. If she was sitting he pawed her and breathed heavily.
Next
we decided that she needed to get on her knees and drape herself
over him. He laid her down and waited while she seized. She
did not hit her head, and if she threw-up she would not choke
on it.
I
have been awed by Service Dogs for years but this was the
most awesome thing I had ever seen a dog do, and so naturally.

We
then hopped on a plane and took off for the Islands, many
hours away. Clancy alerted us to a seizure and it gave us
time to put the trays away. While there he took very good
care of her and would come and get me if I was somewhere else
in the house.
In
the year that Jenny had Clancy I was around them swimming,
shopping, on a boat, airplanes, cars, home, dog shows, Service
Dog Meetup group, etc. and he continues to amaze me.
Jenny
was going through so much with her seizures and trying so
many different types of medicine that it confused Clancy and
he was alerting all the time or not at all.
Jenny
decided that it was not fair to him and that someone else
needed him so she did the selfless thing and asked us to find
someone else for him.

I
kept him for a few weeks and he was so wanting to work.
I
took him to train with Al, Sammy, and Al's friend, Bob, who
is in a wheelchair. Clancy loved working with him and was
always happy when he saw him.
That
got me to thinking about Chris,
a young man I have been talking to for a while now. Chris
wants a Service Dog and Clancy wants a human. We decided to
let Clancy spend time with him and see if he will learn other
tasks to help Chris.
To
be continued...
